In United States, in June 2008 Google has 61.5% of the search market followed by Yahoo (20.9%), Microsoft (9.2%) and Ask (4.3%). The percent of Yahoo is important and so a website which target US market have to be optimized for Google and Yahoo mainly. In European countries, Google has very high percent of share market (March 2008) with a average of 79.2% ( 82% in France, 80.5% in Germany and 74.5% in United Kingdom) and the competitors with a very weak share market, not more than 5%.
